Make Your Own Sight Word Game at Home for Remote (Distance) Learning

Hello Friends,
It has been a LONG time since I have shared an activity with you. I am the first to admit that distance learning and the pandemic pretty much crashed my world as I knew it. As with every teacher that I know, the immediate change in learning totally encompassed my world. So, when school was officially over for the year, I did everything NOT related to school..... gardening, yard work, reading, sewing, walking...... But now that I have had a chance to breathe for awhile, I am starting to think about what school will look like when we return in August. I do not know this, but I am guessing that part of our year will be held virtually. If this is something that you feel you will be doing, I thought that I would share an activity that worked for my students during virtual learning this past spring.

I wanted to give my students something to do at home that was not a printable. Because we do so many games in the classroom, I thought that I would give them directions for how to create a sight word game at home. Since my students are little, they needed help from their parents to make this game, but kids who are older could create the game on their own, I think. All kids need someone to hide the cards for them, though.

The supplies needed for this activity are: 2 pieces of paper (any size), 8 different colors of markers (or crayons), scissors, and a sight word list.

Here are the directions:

*****The kids can draw any shape on their paper that they want. They can even draw a different shape under each word. They just need a shape that they color in. *****

For the families that chose to do this activity, I received positive feedback from them. It uses supplies that most families have at home and was easy to set up.

If you would like a copy of the directions in a PDF form, you can find them by clicking the image below. This is a Google drive link. Please remember... many school districts block downloads from outside sources. If you receive a message asking me to share this document with you, I cannot do that in any way through your school email. Download at home; not your school network and you should have no trouble accessing this document.

So that is my tip for now.... I hope that you are able to take some time to breathe and focus on yourself for a bit before returning to school...

Until next time!

Blessings,
